Kiln Transmutation

During firing, shifting kiln temperatures bring about a natural and unpredictable change in the glaze—each vessel revealing a singular play of color and texture shaped by chance and flame.

Handmade in Jingdezhen

Made from local Jingdezhen clay and decades-developed self-formulated glazes, each piece is handcrafted by artisans with over twenty years of experience in Jingdezhen.

Fired three times at 1300 °C, the surface is smooth and easy to clean. Lead and cadmium are tested to be below 0.001 mg/L, ensuring safety, health, and environmental friendliness.

How much do you know about Kiln Transmutation?

In Jingdezhen the so-called “yaobian 窑变” or “kiln-variation” glaze is achieved through unpredictable shifts in kiln atmosphere, temperature and glazing thickness. During the high-temperature firing, subtle differences in reduction/oxidation, flame direction and cooling rate cause the applied glaze components — copper, iron, manganese, titanium and other oxides — to react in multiple ways. he result is that no two vessels emerge alike: each one reveals a unique array of colour flows, mottled patches and textured runs. The spontaneity of kiln conditions turns the firing process into both experiment and ritual, creating singular pieces where material science meets craft and accident.

Faqs

How should I use these vessels?

Safe for microwave use and can be cleaned with regular dish soap. However, avoid detergents containing abrasives or metal scrubbers, as they may scratch the glaze surface.

What may hurt the glaze?

Do not use metal utensils to scrape the glaze. When storing, avoid stacking to prevent friction damage. Kiln-transmutation ceramics should not be cleaned with strong alkaline or acidic detergents, as the glaze may be corroded.

Is the glaze food-safe?

The glaze is fired at 1300 °C, ensuring no fading or release of harmful substances — perfectly safe for everyday use.

Will my piece be different?

All products are photographed from the actual pieces, though slight color differences may occur due to lighting or monitor variations. Each vessel’s glaze pattern is uniquely formed during firing; these spontaneous kiln variations are what make every piece distinctive. As every item is entirely handmade, minor differences in size are natural.
